The thing is, probability just doesn't work over small sample sizes. 9 chests isn't enough to really get any conclusive numbers. Shrug, I trust a.net to do a legitamate job with this weekend.

Played HM for several hours with only 1 lockpick drop. 12 HM chests opened, 11 crap golds for merchant and 1 diamond aegsis (for heroes).
Used 15 canthan keys, 12 purple and 3 gold junk items!
Used 12 Jade Keys 7 purple 5 gold junk items!
Used 21 Kurzik Keys, 14 purple and 6 junk gold items 1 gold staff with a +30 wrap which I salvaged.
Used various Kournan, Ancient Elonian and Margonite Keys (Approx 25 keys) and 3/4 purple and the rest junk!
Absolutely no keys dropped for me at all!
I would not be at all surprised if Anet did absolutely nothing at all and just told us key/lockpick drops would be better. If they even touched the chest settings at all, I would be shocked. Dunno, some people claim to have had good luck, I sure did not.
Why they call it lavish loot and lockpicks is way beyond me, I have had better luck on occasion without the special weekend.

Lavish loot........not.
2 crappy golds from fow is not lavish. I could have gotten the same items from a normal chest run any day of the week in fow.
Next time a "lavish" weekend comes up they need to call it the midas touch weekend or something, where we can choose to touch a dropped item and it turns req 9 or lower, and all stats max out. Now thats lavish.
My idea of lavish is something more than req 10 items with 20% health below 50% and a crappy armor +7 vs elemental.

I'm sure ANet did exactly what they said, it's more an issue of chest running not being a viable income source or a good way to get higher end loot even when the odds are upped.
Because of the crappy items they usually drop, chest running is sort of like Vegas. If you do it enough, you'll probably hit it big at least once, but in the long run you're almost guaranteed to lose out, and even if you do make a small gain, there's much faster and more reliable ways to earn money.
What people don't seem to realize is that, yes, chests can drop golds more commonly than monsters do, but they don't drop anything better than the mobs, so you might as well just kill mobs if you're actually trying to make money or get an uber-item. Even if you never get a good drop from the mobs, selling the other crap they drop will inevitably put you ahead and you can buy what you were after anyway.

I've barely ever done run chests since about they came out. It's not even worth getting into unless you take 50k worth of runs. Sure you might make more than you put into it but overall it's pretty boring and and involves the ever crappy selling of items in game.

Whats your point? Before this weekend i had 3 lockpicks drop when vanquishing in the space of 5 minutes. Its called luck. The %age chance of getting a lockpick is still small.

What do you expect... its NM! The chances of getting a purple in NM is way way higher than in HM. I don't think i've had a single purple yet doing my HM run in Jahai. When i went to NM i did.
I knew before this event had even begun that loads of people would begin whining that there gold drops weren't any good... the weekend event clearly states double chances of a gold drop from chests, not double chances of a gold drop from chests AND double chances of that gold actually been good/rare skinned.
I've been doing alot of chests runs since the lucky chest event 2 weeks ago. I can safely say the on average the golds i got have sucked and i can also say, with confidence, that the droprate on golds has DEFINATLY improved while the quality of those DEFINATLY hasn't. I'm sure the long term chest runners among us can say the same.
Of course it does mean that through overrunning the chests will suck for a while now...

I agree, as far as im concerned the weekend was a total waste of my time and gold. It's pretty sad that even if you do get a gold, the chance of it even being somewhat useful is next to nothing. All I can hope for is a green drop weekend, at least I wont be wasting any money, just time.

People whine because they are getting golds, but they are crappy. Did Anet say they would be letting ele swords, crystallines, and fellblades drop only? No they said rare drops. Golds are rare. Stop whining, Get in the choppa!

Yeah... the shit golds have nothing to do with the weekend event... just be thankful you get twice as many shit golds which means twice the chance of 1 of them been decent.

Wow, my boyfriend and I have had great luck. I opened several chests in luxon and kurz territory in HM, all gold. Also I ran chests outside Port Sledge, all but one was gold. My boyfriend runs chests out in Realm of Torment. 100 chests in normal mode.... ALL GOLD. Seriously. Damn him for such good luck. Albeit they were mostly shite, but he's doing it for chest opening and wisdom titles.

Holy crap Anet! Item prices are already dropping at stupidly high rates. I can see it now..
WTS req9 15^50 20/20 phoniex blade, 5k!!! Hurry, only 15 left!!!!
Everyone wants there to be tons and tons of gold drops while having them maintain their value. Look people, either golds are rare and valuable, or common and cheap. Can't have it both ways.
I'm not a big farmer, but sometimes I run chests for unlucky points when I'm bored (probably wont this weekend cause I don't feel like it.) But seriously, cant wait to see what everything is selling for in LA/Kamadan on Monday...

With the intentional gimping of hench AI and the complete reliance on non-existent PUGs? I doubt it. Without 7-hero parties, hard mode is dead to everyone but solo farmers. Note that wasn't a '7 HERO PARTIES NOW !!!1!!one' type comment - I couldn't care less, because my only real interest in HM is solo-farming for the increased gold droprate.
But it would be a shame that something which Anet spent 6 months longer than planned on would fail simply because people want to play it, but can't because of lack of numbers. There are other reasons (the disguising of a simple attack speed buff as 'super-improved AI') why I think hard mode is bad, but for it to end up dieing a long-overdue death even when people still want to play wouldn't be a good ending.

Common and cheap works for me. It's also (if you take Gaile's justifications for the loot scaling screwup at face value, rather than as PR babble) the direction that Anet wants to take the game in. If you can get whatever weapon you need (say, for example, a Furious collector spear of Defense) for 5k then questing and merching the resulting garbage drops is a perfectly viable way of playing the game. Think about it - if the game had been like this from the beginning (hopefully GW2 will) then there would be no upset over constant farming nerfs (because nobody would need to farm to get items necessary to play the game, like max armor), there would be less botting (less demand for eBay gold), and everyone in general (Anet included) would be happier due to this reduction in aggro.

I am rather happy with the event got tier 2 on both the things and got myself some nice golds ^.^ one piece of advice though be sure to check where the chests are located and what spawns close to it... for example when a chest spawns close to where you are AND has mandragor surrounding it dont open it its a big fat chance of being a purple... :/
but yeah I are happy last drop was a req 9 strenght eternal shield actually...

I got five lockpicks farming in HM. Retained them a few times. Getting close to another tier in Treasure Hunter and am getting golds decent enough to give to my heroes on some of my other characters, bunch of tomes and the occasional gold drop from the monsters. Still never have seen a single FoW or UW pass, but hey its fun and I got nothing to complain about.

People would also not play the game as there would be nothing for vanity. Some people also like farming. I really can't see Anet winning more people over than they'd lose.
